Carbon capture is a technology designed to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to prevent CO2 from being released into the atmosphere, where it contributes to climate change.
There are two types of Carbon Capture :
On the ground Carbon Capture or Direct Air Capture (DAC) :
1. from Biogenic CO2 (from biomass)
2. from Industrial CO2 (from fossil fuel combustion, e.g. refining, petrochemical and cement industries).
Onboard Carbon capture :
Which consists of installing infrastructure directly on ships to capture CO2 from the ship’s fumes.
In both cases, the process typically involves capturing CO2 at its source, transporting it, and securely storing. Then, it can be stored geologically (underground, former oilfields), used to make synthetic fuels (e-fuels) or for mineralization (building materials, etc.).
